The correct use of crutches

Publish Time: 2023-12-01     Origin: Site

A cane is the third leg of a person. In addition to the elderly with weak legs and mobility problems, when we have lower limb injuries or after leg surgery, we also need to walk with the help of crutches. But the fact is, not everyone knows how to use it. There are even cases of secondary injuries due to the wrong use of crutches. Here is the correct way to use crutches. The following actions are illustrated in the case of the right leg as the affected leg.

Here is the content list:

l Double crutch walking

l Walking with one crutch

l Double crutches on the stairs

l Double crutches down the stairs

1、Double crutch walking

We have to support the double crutches in front of both sides of the body. We straighten our elbows. At the same time, we support our weight with both hands and move the crutches forward. Then our right affected leg should first move forward to between the double crutches. Then the right leg will move the left leg forward to the front of the crutches. Repeat this action to walk forward.

2、Walking with one crutch

We have to hold the cane with our left hand. Then we let the crutches and the right affected leg move forward first. At the same time, our body weight moves to the crutches position. Then we step forward with our left leg. This repeats the movement to walk forward. It is important to note here that the single crutch must be used on the opposite side of the affected leg. Many people subconsciously feel that the right leg is bad on the right side, which is the wrong view.

3、Double crutches on the stairs

When we are ready to go up the stairs, first near the bottom of the stairs. Then we hold a crutch with each hand while supporting our weight.

Then our left leg steps up one flight of stairs first and puts the weight on the left leg.

We then move the crutches and the right affected leg up to the same level of stairs. We stand firmly and then continue up the stairs. We should not rush.

It is important to note that it is best to have someone to work with when we go up the stairs.

4、Double crutches down the stairs

When we are ready to go down the stairs, we first approach the edge of the stairs. Then we hold a crutch in each hand while supporting our weight.

Then we move the crutches to the next step of the stairs first. Then we follow the previous step with our right affected leg.

After the hands are supported and stabilized, our weight should be shifted down. Finally, we move our left leg to the next step of the stairs. After standing firm, we will continue down the stairs. Remember not to rush.

We should also note that it is best to have someone assist us when we descend the stairs with crutches.
