The structure of manual wheelchairs

Manual wheelchairs are chairs equipped with wheels to help replace walking, and an important mobility tool for people with limited mobility. Manual wheelchairs not only meet the mobility needs of the physically disabled and people with limited mobility, but also facilitate family members to move and take care of patients, so that patients can exercise and participate in social activities with the help of wheelchairs. Manual wheelchairs generally consist of seven parts: pushers, wheelchair frames, wheels, brakes, anti-backward device, seat backrest, and footrest. Among the main components of a manual wheelchair are the wheels, brakes, and seat cushion.

Here is the content list:

The wheels of manual wheelchairs

1、 Solid-type wheels: solid type wheels are easy to push, move faster on flat ground, and are not easy to burst. However, they vibrate a lot on uneven roads and are not easy to pull out when they are stuck in a groove of the same width as the tire.

2、 Wheels with pneumatic inner tubes: they are harder to push and easier to puncture, but the vibration is smaller than solid ones.

3、Wheels without inflatable inner tubes: because they do not puncture and sit comfortably, but they are harder to push than the solid ones.

4、 Handwheels: they are unique to manual wheelchairs and are designed to make it easier for the user to drive the wheelchair by adding friction to the surface of the handwheel.

The brakes of manual wheelchairs

1、 Notch brake:it is safe and reliable, but it takes more effort. It can brake on the slope even after adjustment.

2、 Elbow joint brake: It uses the lever principle to apply the rear brake through several joints. It offers greater mechanical advantages than a notch brake, but is also more vulnerable to failure. In order to increase the braking power of the patient, an extension rod is usually added to the wheelchair's brake. However, this extension bar is easily damaged and can affect the safety of the manual wheelchairs if it is not checked frequently.

The saddles of manual wheelchairs

The seat cushion of the manual wheelchair should be highly attentive to the quality of the cushion to avoid pressure sores. It is best to use an egg basket (egg-crate) type or Roto cushion. This seat cushion for manual wheelchairs is made of a large piece of plastic with a large number of nipple-shaped hollow plastic posts about 5 cm in diameter. Each pillar on top of the seat cushion is soft and can be easily moved. The pressure surface of the patient sitting on top of the wheelchair becomes a large number of pressure points, and when the patient moves slightly, the pressure points change with the movement of the nipples, so that the pressure points can be constantly changed. This change can prevent pressure sores caused by frequent pressure on the same part of the patient.
